There are two useful verification paths
Secret-code verification checks whether the private code saved with a HashMyWords receipt matches the verifier stored for that record. This is the verification tool available from the main HashMyWords app.
Exact-file verification is available from a file proof's verification link. It independently loads the HashMyWords proof hash from Hedera and lets you compare a local file with that recorded evidence.
Verify with a secret code
Verify an exact file
For a file proof, open the verification link in the receipt or certificate. HashMyWords first checks the referenced Hedera evidence against the public Mirror Node.
Choose the file you want to test. It is hashed locally in your browser. For H2 proofs, that SHA-256 is compared directly with the SHA-256 recovered from HCS; historical H1 proofs are checked using their original proof-hash format.
What does “Verified” mean?
A successful verification establishes a specific technical fact: the supplied proof material matches the earlier HashMyWords record or, for exact-file verification, the selected file matches the cryptographic proof hash recorded in the referenced Hedera evidence.
What if verification fails?
For a secret code, first make sure you copied the complete code from the correct receipt. HashMyWords cannot recover a lost secret code.
For a file proof, make sure you selected the exact original file. Renaming a file alone does not change its bytes, but editing, recompressing, re-exporting or otherwise changing the file normally changes its hash. Some mobile photo workflows can also re-export image bytes when a copy is created.
Frequently asked questions
Does a valid secret code prove authorship?
No. It confirms that the secret code matches the verifier stored with that HashMyWords record. It does not by itself prove authorship, identity or legal ownership.
Can I verify a file without uploading it?
Yes. Exact-file verification hashes the selected file locally in your browser. The file and its standard SHA-256 are not uploaded during that comparison.
Where do I find the verification link?
File-proof receipts and shareable certificates include a verification link. The secret-code Verify tool is available from the main HashMyWords app.
What if I lost my secret code?
HashMyWords cannot recover it. If you still have a file-proof verification link, you can independently check the Hedera proof hash and compare the exact file without revealing a secret code.
