Why protect a PDF before sharing it with AI?

When you upload a document to an AI service, send it to another person or publish it, it can become difficult to show exactly which version you originally shared. A later copy may look almost identical while containing different bytes.

HashMyWords Protect creates a separate hardened reference copy before you share it. The protected PDF is rebuilt in your browser and the exact final bytes are then timestamped through HashMyWords. If that protected file is changed later, exact-file verification will no longer match the earlier proof.

Protect does not control the AI provider. It does not stop a third-party service from reading, storing, analysing or using a PDF you choose to upload. Check that provider's privacy terms and data controls before sharing confidential material.

What does Protect change in the PDF?

Protect v1 is deliberately conservative. It creates a new PDF from the document's page content instead of simply changing a permission flag on the original file.

ValidateThe PDF is checked locally. Encrypted PDFs, XFA forms and PDFs with existing digital signature fields are rejected rather than silently damaged.
RebuildOrdinary form fields are flattened where present. Interactive annotations and page actions are removed, and source-only catalog structures such as document JavaScript and embedded-file name trees are not carried into the new document.
AuditThe rebuilt document is structurally checked for active PDF features before it can proceed to hashing.
SealThe exact rebuilt bytes are hashed locally and the resulting SHA-256 is recorded on Hedera HCS.

Links, comments, attachments and other interactive PDF behaviour may therefore disappear from the protected copy. That is intentional: use the downloaded protected PDF as the reference version you want to preserve.

Does HashMyWords upload the PDF?

No. The original PDF and the rebuilt protected PDF are processed in your browser. HashMyWords does not upload either file or either filename.

After the protected PDF is finalised, your browser calculates its standard SHA-256. For current H2 proofs, HashMyWords submits that exact 64-character hash as public proof data and records it on Hedera HCS.

The public Hedera proof does not reveal the document itself, but it deliberately reveals the protected PDF's SHA-256. Anyone who already has the exact PDF can independently calculate the same hash and compare it with the public record.

How do you check the protected PDF later?

After the Hedera submission is confirmed, HashMyWords gives you a protected PDF, receipt, certificate and verification link. Keep the downloaded protected PDF together with that evidence.

To verify it later, open the verification link and choose the protected PDF on your device. The browser hashes it locally and, for current H2 proofs, compares that SHA-256 directly with the hash independently recovered from Hedera HCS. Historical H1 proofs retain their original verification path.

For an H2 proof, an exact match means the selected file has the SHA-256 recorded at the shown Hedera consensus time. Change even one byte and the SHA-256 will normally change.

What Protect does not do

Protect is a document-hardening and tamper-evidence tool. It is not a substitute for every other document-security control.

  • It is not encryption. Anyone who receives the protected PDF can still read the visible contents unless you use separate encryption.
  • It is not DRM. It cannot prevent copying, printing, screenshots or redistribution.
  • It is not a malware guarantee. Rebuilding and structurally auditing the PDF removes important classes of active and interactive content, but HashMyWords does not certify that every possible malicious technique has been eliminated.
  • It is not authorship or ownership proof. The timestamp establishes a cryptographic fact about exact document bytes and a point in Hedera history, not who wrote or legally owns the contents.
  • It does not make an AI service private. Protect cannot govern what a third-party AI provider does after you voluntarily upload the protected document.

Can I use the same workflow before Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or another AI tool?

Yes. Protect is independent of the destination AI service: it creates a hardened, timestamped reference PDF first. The AI provider’s own privacy, retention and training policies still apply after you upload the file there.

Does Protect stop an AI provider from training on or retaining my PDF?

No. Protect creates pre-upload tamper and version evidence. It cannot control a third-party AI provider’s storage, training, retention or data-use policies.

Does my PDF get uploaded to HashMyWords?

No. The original and rebuilt PDFs stay in your browser. For current H2 proofs, only the protected PDF SHA-256 and proof metadata are submitted for public timestamping on Hedera.

Does Protect make the PDF impossible to edit?

No. A recipient can still create a changed copy. The point is that a changed copy will no longer produce the same exact-file verification result.

Does Protect remove viruses or guarantee a safe PDF?

No. Protect rebuilds and audits the PDF to remove important active and interactive structures, but it is not a general malware scanner or security certification service.

What PDFs are not supported?

Protect v1 rejects encrypted or password-protected PDFs, XFA forms and PDFs containing existing digital signature fields.

Can I prove the protected PDF has not changed?

For a current H2 proof, you can verify that a selected protected PDF has the exact SHA-256 recorded on Hedera. That is strong tamper evidence for the file bytes, but it does not prove authorship or the truth of the document contents.
