What does it mean to timestamp text?

A digital timestamp links a piece of text to a recorded point in time. HashMyWords turns the text into a cryptographic hash and records the proof hash on Hedera.

Public text uses the SHA-256 of the submitted plaintext. Private text stays in your browser and uses a salted SHA-256 hash so the plaintext itself is not sent to HashMyWords.

Important: a timestamp can help show that matching content existed by a certain time. It does not, by itself, prove who wrote the content, who owns it, or whether it is true.

How to timestamp your text

Public or private?

Public is useful when you want the message itself to be searchable on HashMyWords. The text is stored by HashMyWords alongside its fingerprint and timestamp information.

Private is designed for content you do not want HashMyWords to store. The plaintext and private salt stay in your browser. Only the resulting salted SHA-256 hash is sent for recording; your receipt contains the salt needed to reproduce that hash later.

When is text timestamping useful?

People may want a timestamp when they need a durable record of the state of some words at a particular point in time. Examples include drafts, notes, research observations, creative writing, source-code snippets, project decisions and other records that may change later.

The timestamp is most useful when you also preserve the original material and the receipt. If even one character changes, the resulting hash changes too.

Why use Hedera?

HashMyWords records the proof hash through Hedera Consensus Service. Once the HCS submission reaches consensus, the public ledger record is independent of the HashMyWords database and can be inspected through Hedera Mirror Node infrastructure.

This separates the permanent timestamp evidence from the ordinary website database used for search, accounts, labels and other application features.

Frequently asked questions

Can I timestamp text for free?

Yes. HashMyWords currently lets you create text timestamps without charging the user.

Does HashMyWords prove I wrote the text?

No. The timestamp can help show that matching content existed by a certain time. It does not automatically prove identity, authorship, ownership or truth.

Can I timestamp text privately?

Yes. With Private selected, HashMyWords does not receive or store the private plaintext. Your browser sends only the salted SHA-256 hash used for the proof.

What should I save after timestamping?

Save the receipt, your secret code and the original content. Private receipts also contain the salt needed to reproduce the private hash.
